I’m a big believer in reducing the toxin load in my home and my body as much as possible. I’ve spent so much time over the past 4 years swapping items in our home for non-toxic alternatives. Often people get stuck on this journey because it’s expensive and time-consuming. But here are 6 things you can do to reduce toxins in your home for free!
Our body’s were designed to detox toxins from our environment, but over the year that toxic load has gotten much more intense.
Every day we are exposed to hundreds of harmful chemicals through air pollution, the paint in our homes, processed foods, perfumes, etc.
Thankfully so much of this is actually in our control! We can control what comes into our home or in contact with our bodies.
It can be easy to get overwhelmed with all of the choices and all of the areas to make improvements.
I absolutely recommend taking it a step further and investing in things like Essential Oils, a home water filter and non-toxic personal products.
But there are also things you can do TODAY to reduce toxins in your home for free!
SIMPLE WAYS TO REDUCE TOXINS IN YOUR HOME FOR FREE
WASH YOUR PRODUCE
When you buy fruits and vegetables from the grocery store, they have likely been touched by a dozen people including the farmers.
It has been picked by a farm worker in a field, transported in a large truck (often sprayed with preservatives to help with this process), handled by store employees, touched by several shoppers, and finally the cashier before making it into your home. Not to mention non-organic produce which would have been treated with pesticides and herbicides while it grew. YUCK!
Baking soda or vinegar both make excellent produce washes and you likely already have those things at home!
CLEAN WITH VINEGAR
Cleaning products are full of harmful chemicals such as pthalates, fragrance, alcohols, bleach, etc.
There are lots of non-toxic cleaning products to choose from at a variety of price ranges!
But if you’re on a budget or just want to get started and reduce toxins in your home for free TODAY, you can start cleaning your entire home with white vinegar!
It’s just as effective as most of the store-bought cleaners with non of the harmful side effects.
DRINK MORE WATER
Drinking more water is one of the EASIEST ways to reduce the toxin load in your body for free!
Our body has a natural ability to detox – through poop ??♀️. But when we don’t drink enough water that doesn’t happen effectively.
You should aim to drink at LEAST half your body weight in ounces. So if you weigh 100 lbs you should drink 50 ounces or more.
STOP BURNING CANDLES AND AIR FRESHENERS
Artificial fragrance is one of the most dangerous things to our health and one of the easiest to get rid of.
Did you know that the term “fragrance” isn’t regulated by the FDA?! Companies can add any ingredients under the term “fragrance” as it is considered proprietary.
Ditch the candles, febreeze, air fresheners, plug-ins, etc as they are only negatively impacting your health!
If you love the ambience that candles creates, I love my battery operated candles!
If you feel like you NEED something scented, pure essential oils are a great option!
STOP USING DRYER SHEETS
Dryer sheets are full of synthetic fragrance which I just mentioned with candles & air fresheners.
But they’re also designed to stay on your clothes for days! That means you’re constantly breathing in those harmful fragrances (even if you no longer smell them!)
The fragrance also rubs off onto your skin, which can cause allergies, acne, or more serious chronic health issues down the road!
I wrote this post if you want to learn even more about why we ditched synthetic fragrance in our home!
Having nicely scented laundry might feel like a necessity, but you’ll get used to not having it quickly.
And again, if you really need the scent, invest in Essential Oils and Wool Dryer Balls!
OPEN YOUR WINDOWS
Did you know the air inside your home may actually be more polluted than the air outside? A study by the EPA concluded that the air in your home can be 2-5x more polluted than the air outside!
Many things contribute to indoor air quality, some easily avoidable and others not so much!
- Cleaning Supplies, wipes, laundry detergents
- Air Fresheners, plug-ins, candles
- Cooking Fumes
- Dust & Dirt
- Off-gassing from building materials, paint, carpets
- Flame Retardant Furniture or Clothing
- Heating or Cooling Sources such as Oil, Gas, Coal
Of course, working to reduce this toxic load is important. But opening your windows daily for just 10-20 minutes is an easy way to reduce toxins in your home for free!
REDUCE EMF EXPOSURE
Every electronic device in your home (Laptops, Google home/Alexa, cellphones, baby monitors, WIFI router, bluetooth headphones) give off EMF radiation.
EMF (electromagnetic field) is naturally occurring and even our bodies omit EMF!
However, the volume of this exposure has risen exponentially in the past years. Never before have we been exposed to high levels of radiation 24/7 and we don’t know the health implications of this!
There are simple ways to reduce your exposure to EMF without making large sacrifices. This is a great way to reduce toxins in your home for free.
Choose wired devices over wireless (speakers, headphones). Sleep with your cellphone at least 4 feet away, or in a separate room! Turn your WIFI router off at night.
There are so many simple ways to reduce toxins in your home for free that can really add up to a huge difference in our health!
