You’ve probably read 342513932 gift guides already this holiday season. Not that there’s anything wrong with those, but I wanted to switch it up a bit and share some practical gift ideas that I personally own and LOVE!
I also have a handful of more traditional gift guides for you to check out after!

Black Friday + Cyber Week 2020 Sales
I’ve been making an effort to support local, small + family-run businesses this year. Especially after everything that’s happened in 2020, it’s so important that we support businesses in our own communities!

PRACTICAL GIFT IDEAS 2020
GIRLFRIEND COLLECTIVE LEGGINGS
This year I’ve been trying to make more purchases from companies with ethical + sustainable business practices in place. Girlfriend Collective checks all the boxes! I invested in a pair of their leggings a few months ago and have been loving them!
Not only are their leggings DREAMY, but they’re also made from recycled materials AND their workers are paid fair wages. I’m a HUGE fan and can’t wait to get more.

LODGE DUTCH OVEN
My cast iron dutch oven was actually a Christmas gift last year! I use it every single week to make homemade Sourdough bread!
It’s such a versatile piece in my kitchen – I also use it for soups, broth, roasting a whole chicken. These enamelled dutch ovens are on an amazing sale right now!
SIMPLY ORGANIC BAMBOO
I had been wanting to switch our sheets over to organic sheets for years, and this year I finally did! Y’all, I’m not kidding when I say these are THE SOFTEST sheets I’ve ever felt.
They’re a family run business and their products are all organic bamboo (as the name implies LOL), completely ethically sourced and a total DREAM. I’m 100% positive that anyone on your Christmas list would be thrilled to sleep in a set of these sheets!
ANA LUISA JEWELRY
This fall I transitioned to a capsule wardrobe (although I’ve been very minimal with clothing for years!). And one of my goals with that was to wear accessories more often!
Since I work from home my clothes are super simple + casual, so it’s fun to wear jewelry most days to make me feel a little bit more put together!
Ana Luisa makes timeless, sustainable and carbon neutral jewelry! I’m allergic to nickel, so it’s always been hard for me to find affordable jewelry. This is the perfect middle ground between cheap, trendy jewelry and expensive, heirloom pieces!
PROPUR WATER FILTER
We FINALLY invested in a Propur Water Filter this year and I couldn’t be happier with it! We wanted something that filters out alllll the things – chlorine, fluoride, lead, pesticides, BPA, microplastics, parasites, etc.

If you’re in Canada, this is where I ordered my filter from to avoid duty/shipping fees!
COCOKIND SKINCARE
Okay, I’ve been raving about Cocokind products for yearssss now, but I’m still obsessed.
My favourite is the MyMatch Moisture stick, especially in the winter for dry skin. It’s soooo affordable, the ingredients get an A+, and it’s a woman-run company.
I also love the Mai-light highlighter and wear it most days! It’s gives a really subtle highlight and again has incredible ingredients!

EDDIE BAUER WINTER BOOTS
I FINALLY invested in a pair of winter boots that actually fit properly. You know, after 4.5 years of living in the North Pole. I went back and forth on brands for MONTHS, and finally landed on Eddie Bauer for a few reasons.
They have REALLY good sales, and I paid significantly less for warm winter boots than most other popular brands! Eddie Bauer also has an amazing return policy and I know their products are built to last.
Plus although they aren’t perfect, they are a step in the right direction when it comes to sustainability and responsible sourcing of materials!
I’ve been really happy with my new winter boots in our cold Canadian winter. I do recommend ordering an entire size up though!
HOMESTEADING BOOKS
This year we took a few steps towards becoming more sustainable! One day we’d love to own an acreage/small farm but we’re doing what we can with the space we have right now! This past spring we got laying hens, and doubled our gardening space!
I’ve been loving having physical books to page through in the evenings, or when I’m looking for a recipe or an answer to a question! Here’s a few of my favourite:
CHOCOLATE SUN TANNING LOTION
Raise your hand if you’re mourning the loss of your summer tan 🙋🏼♀️. I’ve realized over the years that having a little bit of colour on my face throughout the winter actually makes me feel better about life. LOL.
Call it vain, but I think it’s a practical strategy to surviving our 349535 month long winters!
I love, love, love this non-toxic sunless tanning lotion. It goes on nicely, doesn’t turn me orange and a bottle of it lasted me probably 9 months of weekly use!
DIY BEESWAX CANDLES
I don’t know why I waited so long to try making my own candles, but it’s so fun + easy!
We haven’t burned candles in our home for years because most of them are unfortunately filled with garbage ingredients. BUT, beeswax candles are non-toxic and even help to purify the air!
4 THINGS ON MY WISH-LIST
I thought I would share a few of the items that I personally have my eye on this year! I’m always a fan of practical gifts. Plus this year I really want to support local + small businesses!
SMASH + TESS ROMPER
This Canadian company has the cutest rompers! I love that they’re soft enough to wear around the house as loungewear, but can also be dressed up to go out!
LINEN PAJAMAS
I’ve been wanting a pair of high quality linen pajamas! These are definitely much more pricey than any sleepwear I’ve ever owned, but I think they’re worth it for something you spend 1/3 of your day wearing!
I loveeee all the options for linen + organic cotton PJs on Etsy!
INDOOR GARDEN
I’m totally obsessed with these hydroponics indoor garden systems! It will probably be a while before I get one for my own home, but I’d LOVE to be able to garden throughout the winter!!
Just Vertical is a Canadian company that sells these gorgeous large hydroponic systems!
If space is limited, there are tons of options for small, counter-sized systems.
GENERATOR
I told you I LOVE practical gifts for Christmas! I just told my husband that I want a backup generator for Christmas LOL. I’ve been working on building an emergency preparedness kit this year, and a generator is a must-have, especially in a cold climate!
I hope you enjoyed these practical gift ideas for 2020! These truly are all products that I personally have loved this year!
