Who else has been waiting PATIENTLY (or not so patiently) to begin yardwork this spring?! I’ve been staring at that last patch of snow in my backyard for TWO WEEKS just waiting for it to be gone. I can’t wait to spend the spring/summer days outside working on our yard!!
Since this is our first spring in our new house, as homeowners…I’ve been doing research on everything we should be doing this spring to make the most of our backyard!
Here is the list I’ve come up with:
- Clean Out Rain Gutters: Even if you did this in the fall, there’s a good change they could use some attention again this spring! I know ours are VERY full!
- Rake the leaves/pick up garbage in yard: I raked so many times last fall, but our yard is still FULL of leaves. It’s best to wait for temperatures to be a little bit warmed before raking. This helps protect your grass, and also allows time for bug eggs to hatch in your grass. I know…I’m advocating for the bugs. But they are a crucial part of the ecosystem, and if you want a healthy yard & garden, you need them! We also have several pieces of garbage that have blown around over the winter from neighbours/people who throw garbage on the ground ?
- Clean your windows: Our windows are looking FILTHY, and I’m so eager to get outside and give them a good wash!
- Pressure wash the exterior: Same as above…The exterior of our house could use a good wash!
- Amend soil: I’ll be adding some fresh top soil and compost to most of our gardens this year!
- Pull Weeds: As soon as it’s nice enough to spend some time in the garden, I’ll be getting a head start on the weeds that are quickly starting to come through! I also plan on making a vinegar weed spray which will hopefully slow their growth!
- Seed bare spots in grass: So far it looks like our grass will come back nicely, but if there are any bare spots, I plan on seeding them right away!
- Replace lightbulbs: A few of our exterior lights have burnt out, so I’ll be replacing those ASAP!
- Tune up Lawn Mower: We actually got a new (to us) lawn mower at the end of last summer that we never actually got a chance to use! So we’ll be doing a tune up on that before doing our first mow of the year.
- Mow the lawn: Once our lawn mower is all tuned up, and our grass has come back to life…it will need to be cut! It snowed so early last fall, so we didn’t get a chance to do one last cut at the end of the summer. So our grass is already very long!
Like I mentioned, we’re new to home ownership so I’d love to hear any other things you do every spring to prep your yard for the summer!
