Most people have failed their New Year’s Resolutions by mid-January!! I believe this is because we set these huge goals, with no action plan. We also set way too many goals, which becomes overwhelming and then we just quit them ALL. I wanted to share the ways you can actually set goals that stick this year!
DON’T WAIT
Don’t wait to set goals until Monday, or until the start of a new month/year. The worst thing you can do is always say “I’ll start on Monday” or “I’ll be better next year”. Start today. Always try to be the best version of yourself!
While I am writing this post in the first week of January, these things apply to any time of year!
REFLECT ON LAST YEAR
If you aren’t doing this in January, you can still reflect on last year, or even last month! Reflect on what you did well, and what you could do better! Take some time to write these things down. Ask yourself a few questions:
- What did I do well last year?
- What areas of my life am I frustrated with?
- Where do I want to improve?
- Why do I want to improve?
It’s very important that you write this down. That way you can go back to it at the end of this year and reflect again. We have a tendency to not see the growth in our lives because it happens so slowly. But when you’ve written down your thoughts at the beginning of the year, you can look back months from now and see how far you’ve come!
DON’T TRY TO CHANGE OVERNIGHT
Most people cannot make a ton of huge changes at once, and instead they end up getting overwhelmed. Instead of trying to tackle a list of 10 goals, chose just 2 or 3 goals that you can REALLY focus on mastering. Once you’ve mastered those for a few months, add in 1 or 2 more goals. Once the first things have become a habit, you’ll crave more change and you’ll create momentum. For me, this is a huge contributor to creating goals that stick!
REFLECT ON YOUR DREAM LIFE
I’m not talking about owning 3 vacation homes, or retiring at the age o 25. If those are your goals, great! But it’s also important to think about what kind of person you want to be and the lifestyle you want to live.
Do you strive to be the type of person who wakes up early and is very productive with their days? Is it important to you to be present with your family and children? Do you want to grow a business?
Create goals that will help you achieve those goals.
MAKE YOUR GOALS SPECIFIC
Don’t say “I want to be a healthy person” because that’s not something you can measure. If your New Year’s resolution is to be healthier, how will you know if you’ve achieved that goal on December 31?
You want to be able to look back and see that you have accomplished a goal, otherwise you’ll always feel disappointed!
Make your goals specific such as
- Don’t go on my phone for the first hour after waking up
- Go to the gym 3x a week
- Walk my dog daily
- Cook dinner at home 5x a week
- Book 1 vacation this year
- Get a raise
FOCUS ON YOUR DAILY ROUTINE
Instead of focusing on huge goals, just try to make little changes in what you do every day. If you’re consistent, the little changes will create huge results!
If you want to become healthier in 2021, look at how you need to change your daily routine. Make it a habit to go to the gym before work/after work every day.
If your goal is to pay off debt this year changes to your daily routine might look like packing a lunch/making a coffee before work, removing your credit card from websites that have automatically saved it.
I hope these tips will help you create goals that stick! I’m passionate about setting yourself up for success when it comes to goal setting!
