If you’ve read my summer or winter hygge lists, you might see some overlap – that’s because the foundations of Hygge remain the same. But of course they’ll look different throughout the seasons! Today I’m sharing how to have a Hygge Fall.
First, let’s go over the basics. What the heck is Hygge and why does it matter?
WHAT IS HYGGE?
“Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience, rather than about things. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe, that we are shielded from the world and allow ourselves to let our guard down. You may be having an endless conversation about the small or big things in life – or just be comfortable in each other’s silent company – or simply just be by yourself enjoying a cup of tea.” – The Little Book Of Hygge, Meik Wiking.
WHY IS HYGGE SUCH A BIG DEAL?
The Danish people are known to be the happiest people in the world. And it certainly isn’t because they live in a climate with great weather. There are many factors that go into their high quality of life such as health care, work-home balance, and government. But one overarching value that the Danes have is Hygge.
Their culture revolves around this concept of cosiness, not just at home but in restaurants, at work, in school, etc.
I don’t know about you, but I want to learn from the happiest people in the world, and adopt some of their cultural values!

HOW TO HAVE A MORE HYGGE FALL
COZY LIGHTING
Hygge is ALLLL about lighting. Soft, warm, cozy lighting.
Opt for candles, soft lamps, or the glow of a fire if your home has a fireplace! Basically, you’re just setting the mood – even if it’s just you home alone!
I always opt for non-toxic, beeswax candles OR battery operated candles to reduce toxic exposure in my home. Unfortunately those fall candles we love so much aren’t so great for our health (read more here). I have the best battery operated candles that even flicker like a real candle!
BRING THE OUTDOORS IN
One big concept of Hygge is nature! As the days get colder and maybe we’re spending less time outside, bring the outdoors into your home.
Not only is this a free way to decorate, it will create a cozy hygge atmosphere!
- Logs (dried to ensure no bugs)
- Colorful Leaves
- Twigs
- Tree Berries
- Pumpkins
- Mums
- Pinecones
- Orange Garland
Use these natural elements to decorate your home for a more hygge fall!
ADD COZY BLANKETS
Every morning I cozy up in a blanket on the couch to start my morning! I love blankets that can be used throughout all the seasons but they’re key for a Hygge fall! Here are some dreamy ones I found *heart eyes*. Also, how cute would these be as a gift for the cozy-lover in your life?!
(Of course you should NEVER feel like you have to buy new things in order to have a Hygge home. The items you already have are amazing too!)
HOMEMADE WARM DRINKS
There’s no other time of the year that I crave warm drinks ALL DAY LONG. I’m constantly sipping on Hot chocolate, Apple cider, and teas during these fall days.
SPICY AROMAS
One of the most beloved parts of fall are the Candles! I already mentioned that we don’t burn scented candles but that doesn’t mean we skip out on the aromas entirely!
ESSENTIAL OILS
Essential Oils are one of my favourite way to enjoy a hygge fall scent while also boosting my immune system! I actually prefer warm woodsy smells over the typical spicy fall blends!
Of course, if Essential Oils aren’t your thing there are other ways to enjoy fall smells in your home!
- Make a “simmering pot” by adding sliced apples / oranges, cinnamon sticks, clove and fresh herbs to a pot of water. Simmer on the stove on low all day!
- For a simpler version, just add cinnamon + vanilla to a pot of water and simmer throughout the day.
- Bake your favorite fall treats such as Apple Crisp, or Pumpkin Pie.
EMBRACE SEASONAL FLAVOURS
During the fall we tend to crave heartier comfort foods. I’m all about embracing that in a way that is still healthy + nourishing!
I love using seasonal fruits + veggies especially this time of year! Lots of potatoes, zucchini, root veggies, squash, apples! I’ve been busy processing + preserving lots of my summer harvest.
As the weather continues to cool we’ll be eating more soups, nourish/buddha bowls, and probably baked goods for a hygge fall. 😉
COZY UP BY THE FIRE
Fires are very Hygge – the flickering light, the warmth and the slowness that comes with sitting by a fire. My dream house definitely has a fireplace and/or woodstove! But for now we have a little electric fireplace like this that I run every single day. It has the option to just give off a flickering fire glow OR to also give off heat! Either way it creates the coziest atmosphere!
Better yet – have an outdoor bonfire and invite your friends! Make some yummy snacks for the ultimate hygge fall evening!
I hope you feel inspired to have a Hygge fall this year!
