The internet is full of blogs and articles about homesteading (like this one!) but there’s just something about a physical book you can hold in your hands! I’ve been on the hunt for some helpful gardening and beginner homesteading books and these are the ones I’ve been loving!
I would say these are all beginner homesteading books that cover lots of topics, as opposed to books specific to one climate or one topic!
I love to take advantage of my local library to find the gardening and homesteading books that I’d like to add to my own collection.
Learn How To Start A Compost Pile and 50 Things To Compost
How To Start Your First Garden and Easy Vegetables To Grow
BEGINNER HOMESTEADING BOOKS YOU NEED TO READ
THE BACKYARD HOMESTEAD
This Backyard Homestead Book is one of the most popular beginner homesteading books, and for good reason!
It covers every topic from growing, harvesting and preserving your own veggies, to raising chickens for eggs, and making your own medicinal tinctures.
It’s a great introduction to growing your own food and becoming self-sufficient.
THE BACKYARD HOMESTEAD: A GUIDE TO RAISING FARM ANIMALS
The Backyard Homestead Guide to Raising Farm Animals is by the same publisher as the previous book.
This goes more in detail about raising farm animals like chickens, goats, rabbits, cows and bees – even on a small property!
Although we only plan on having chickens in our current home, it was so interesting to read about the different animals!
This is one of the beginner homesteading books that would be a helpful reference guide to have on hand!
THE URBAN HOMESTEAD
This Urban Homestead book is a short and simple resource book!
There are step-by-step instructions for how to start a compost pile, how to use greywater, rotating crops.
I love that this book keeps it very simple without overcomplicating each topic!
LITTLE HOUSE IN THE SUBURBS
Little House in the Suburbs may be my personal favourite of these beginner homesteading books!
The authors personalities and humour really shine through their writing, and I found myself laughing out loud while learning about how quirky chickens can be!
This book has a lot of unique tips and personal experience that I hadn’t seen in other beginner homesteading books. I borrowed this book from my local library but will for sure be purchasing my own copy!
GROW WHAT YOU LOVE
Grow What You Love is more of a gardening resource book. It is beautifully illustrated and very enjoyable to read!
If you’re a beginner or intermediate gardener, I think you’ll enjoy this!
It goes over organic pest control, companion planting, and so many different varieties of our favourite vegetables.
URBAN HOMESTEADING
Urban Homesteading is very focused on permaculture – the idea of working with every aspect of nature. She teaches you how to become self-sufficient and not have to rely on the government (which I’m a fan of!)
It’s a little bit less aesthetically pleasing than some of the other options, but very informative!
I hope this introduced you to some new homesteading and gardening books! I plan to update this regularly as I find new books that I love!
