A MINIMALIST BABY WARDROBE FOR FALL/WINTER

When it comes to baby clothes, I’m a fan of comfortable, practical, neutral and minimal! I like to be able to easily mix and match any items in my baby’s wardrobe. And although my baby is a boy, I hope to reuse his clothing even if I have a girl in the future!

TAKE INVENTORY

Before making any new purchases (for myself OR my baby), I always take inventory of what I have. When looking at the next size up I realized that we have an abundance of pants and hardly any shirts!

Then I like to make a list of what we still need. Of course this will also depend on your lifestyle and preferences! I’m happy to do laundry ever 2-3 days so I don’t find we need many items. If you’re more a laundry once a week kind of mom, you might want more of each item!

CREATE A COLOUR PALETTE

This might sound “extra”, but the purpose of a colour palette actually isn’t for an aesthetic wardrobe (although that’s a perk 😉). It actually makes it so much easier to create outfits when I can easily mix + match everything.

There will always be a few items that don’t 100% fit our colour palette. Maybe a seasonal item, a hand-me-down, or gifted item – and that’s ok! But overall, most of our clothing works together.

Shopping at just one or two locations can make it easier to stick to your colour palette. Our favourite shops for baby clothes are H+M and Kate Quinn. Although Kate Quinn is much harder to find items in stock. I find that clothing from both of these stores holds up well after several washes.

CURATE YOUR BABY’S FALL/WINTER CAPSULE WARDROBE

Once you’ve decided on a colour palette, and determined what you have versus what you still need – it’s time to begin curating baby’s wardrobe!

Like I mentioned before, the number of items will differ for each family. I share below how many items I like to have in each category, as well as some of the items we personally love or that I have my eye on purchasing in the future.

PS: I by no means believe you need ALL of these items for your winter capsule wardrobe. But I wanted to share pieces that I love that can easily be used to curate your own baby capsule wardrobe!

SLEEPERS

Some people may choose not to include sleepers/pajamas in their capsule wardrobe. It really depends on if you’re the type of person to always get baby dressed, or if you leave them in their sleeper for the day!

And call me crazy but I don’t actually mind the snap sleepers! Plus I often find that they’re cheaper and come in better colours + prints.

PANTS

We love comfy leggings and soft jeggings! Since we’re cloth diapering, I like the looser style over straight leggings.

tops

I find that 5-6 onesies (we LOVE the kimono style that doesn’t go over their head) is a good amount for us. Plus a few extra long sleeves and sweaters for layering.

OUTFITS

I always like to have a few matching sets, or one-piece outfits!

OUTERWEAR

We live in Canada so some warmer pieces are necessary!

I know everyone hates baby socks, but we actually have a pack of these and LOVE them. They stay on his feet all day!
